We come together to protest the ongoing persecution of Coptic Christians in Egypt. On Good Friday, one innocent Egyptian man was brutally killed while worshipping in a Coptic church in Alexandria. Although the Egyptian government has downplayed the religious implications of this murder, this incident is only one in a pattern of recent violent attacks against Coptic Christians in Egypt.

April 2006 “The time is coming that whoever kills you will think that he offers God service.” (John 16:2) Copts around the world were saddened and dismayed during the most holy days of the year by the events transpiring in the great city of Alexandria. These events, which we believe are escalating daily, have only added a new series of adversities to those that have befallen our Coptic flock. We see no forthcoming equitable solution that would make all citizens feel equal with one another.

The U.S. has tremendous leverage in terms of funding if it chooses to use it, said Nina Shea, director of CRF. "Too often the State Department has failed to speak up," Shea said in a telephone interview on Friday.
Shea described the Egyptian system as one where justice has been denied to Christians in the past. Six years ago, 20 Christians were killed in sectarian violence but no Muslim was convicted of murder, she said.
