KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) - A Malaysian forum on freedom of religion drew an angry protest by Muslims on Saturday, revealing a sharp divide in this mainly Muslim nation over the issue of renouncing Islam.Malaysia's constitution enshrines freedom of religion but Muslims cannot officially renounce Islam. Those who convert to another faith can be jailed by a local Islamic court.

Saudi Arabia has agreed to protect the rights of non-Muslims, revise textbooks that teach religious intolerance and add teeth to a recently created Human Rights Commission after months of private negotiations with the United States over religious freedom, the State Department said Wednesday.

Youssef Sidhom: The church of Anba Barsoum al-Erian in the village of Arabat Abu-Aziz in Sohag, Upper Egypt was built in 1922. The mud brick church walls and the timber roof are already cracking and disintegrating, and the toilets and other facilities are in a deplorable state. The church needs to be rebuilt, enlarged and provided with utilities to meet the needs of a congregation which has massively grown over more than 80 years. Although the area surrounding the church is wide enough for the needed expansion, it is deplorable that some officials are actively hindering the approvals required.
