On June 29, 2006 Egypt's prosecutor-general ordered Mahmoud Hussein, 25, committed to the mental hospital after a medical evaluation and without trial, the duration of his incarceration was not specified. Hussein is named by the government as the lone perpetrator of the knife attacks on Coptic worshippers in 4 churches on April 14th, 2006.

The Egyptian security sources have said that the perpetrator is mentally ill even before his arrest. Copts expressed their doubt over the official version and accused the authorities of covering up evidence of a larger, more organized attack on Christians.
