The Fatwa Competition PDF Print E-mail
Written by Mohamad Salah: Al-Hayat

There is an old Egyptian proverb that states: "He who burns himself drinking soup will be cautious even when drinking yogurt." Its meaning is clear, but the Mufti of Egypt Dr. Ali Jomaa pays little heed to proverbs like this. Each time his statements or fatwas results in an uproar, he goes on to accuse the media and its people of inflaming things in pursuit of narrow journalistic interests, or of distorting his words and their meaning in order to harm him.

This has happened several times over the last few months, a case being the Mufti's recent article, published in the Washington Post, in which he permits the conversion back to one's original faith after converting to Islam from it - a concept known as al radda.

Preventing the West from Understanding Jihad PDF Print E-mail
Written by Walid Phares

WalidIn the years that followed 9/11, two phenomena characterized the Western public's understanding of the terrorists' ideology. The first characteristic stemmed from the statements made by the jihadists themselves. More than ever, Islamist militants and jihadi cadres didn't waste any opportunity to declare, clarify, explain, and detail the meaning of their aqida (doctrine) and their intentions to apply Jihadism by all means possible. Unfortunately for them, though, those extremely violent means changed the international public opinion: the public now was convinced that there was an ideology of Jihadism, and that its adherents meant business worldwide.

Dioscorus of Aphrodito: A 6th Century A.D. Coptic Jurist, Writer, and a Poet PDF Print E-mail
Written by Ed Rizkalla

by Ed Rizkalla

Ed Rizkalla Most of us are cognizant with the Coptic religious literature, written by early Christian philosophers such as Clement of Alexandria and Origen; and Church Fathers such as Pope Athanasius I, and Pope Cyril I. However, there seems to be some misconceptions, misunderstanding, and perhaps inadequate appreciation for Coptic secular literature of the late antique period circa 300-700 A.D. Among the Coptic writers of this period are John Philoponos, a 6th century philosopher, John Bishop of Nikiou, a 7th century historian, and Dioscorus of Aphrodito a 6th century jurist, writer and a poet. In this brief article, I hope to shed some light on the secular Coptic literature of the late antique period, and Dioscorus as an example.

Islam's Global War against Christianity PDF Print E-mail
Written by Patrick Poole

Some of the oldest Christian communities in the world are subject to relentless attack and teeter on the brink of extinction at the hands of the "Religion of Peace": Palestinian Christians in Gaza and the West Bank; Assyrian, Syriac and Chaldean Christians in Iraq; Coptic Christians in Egypt; Evangelical and Orthodox Christians in Eastern Ethiopia and Eritrea; Armenian Orthodox Christians in Turkey; and Maronite Christians in Lebanon.

Several of these communities date back to the beginning decades of Christianity and all have weathered wave after wave of Islamic persecution for centuries and more, but in the very near future some will simply cease to exist. In our lifetime, the only trace of their past existence will be in footnotes in history books (and probably only Western history books at that).

CAIR: Destroying Free Speech One Extortion at a Time? PDF Print E-mail
Written by Morgaan Sinclair
Wednesday, 04 July 2007

The veiled threat, of course—to government agencies and corporations alike—is that if they do not cave one of two things will happen: (1) that they will face a malicious-litigation lawsuit that will cost them a Byzantine fortune or (2) that they will be punished with a real, palpable act of violence. And over and over again the American government, U.S. corporations—and, most sadly, the peaceful majority of American Muslims—have caved to the threat.

The latest in this series of assaults is the banning of MEMRI, Hot Air, and Jihad Watch websites from the internet systems of the U.S. Government, the City of Chicago, Fidelity Investments, Site Coach, and Bank of America—and surely there are more—over the last few weeks. The reason given: complaints of “hate speech.”
