“Shere ne Maria: ti Theotokos”
“Shere ne Maria: ethmav en Isos Pi ekhristos”
“Shere ne Maria: ethmav en Eios Theos”
The Christians of Egypt, the Copts, celebrated the Feast of the Virgin Mary on Misra 16th, 1724 AM on the Coptic calendar, August 22, 2008 AD on the Gregorian calendar. The Feast culminates the popular Fasting of Saint Mary, observed by the vast majority of the Copts, and many Muslims in Egypt who believe in the healing powers of God through the intercessions of Saint Mary. I would like to extend warm greetings to the Copts all over the world and wish them a blessed Saint Mary’s Feast.

Christians Suffering in Algeria and Egypt
The small Christian community in Algeria has undergone a rough period in the last few months. Two converts to Christianity were recently convicted of promoting their faith and given suspended sentences and fines, the Associated Press reported July 2.
Rachid Mohammed Seghir and Jammal Dahmani were sentenced for the crime of “distributing documents that aimed at weakening the faith of Muslims,” said their lawyer Khelloudja Khalfoun.
The convicted are evangelical Protestants, prosecuted when extracts from the Bible and other Christian books were found in one of their cars in 2007.

In this series, the writer reviewed some of the chronicles of the Arab historian al-Maqrizi (1) on Coptic cultural attributes, and explored some aspects of the context and milieu of his time. Al-Maqrizi was neither a Coptophile nor a friend of the Copts, and perhaps this might add more credence for his writing about the Coptic culture. His writings, like several other medieval Arab writers, tended to include unsubstantiated and racist negative commentaries about the Copts. Al-Maqrizi was however reflecting the milieu, knowledge, and the deficiency thereof of his time. For his credit, Al-Maqrizi recorded with candor many of the atrocities committed by several Arab and Turkish rulers against Egypt, the Copts and Coptic heritage. Al-Maqrizi, even attempted to no avail, to gently remind the rulers of his time- as many of them found it politically expedient to show a façade of Islamic piety, while stirring the embers of fanaticism against the Copts to destabilize their political opponents- with tens of verses quoted from the Muslim holy books, which admonish fair and amicable relationship with the Copts.
