Bishop AngaelosGeneral Bishop of the Coptic Orthodox Church in England

Having read several comments in Egyptian and Arabic newspapers, whether electronic or in print form, covering the return of His Holiness Pope Shenouda III to Cairo from London, via Heathrow International Airport, we would like to make the following points:

His Holiness consecrated the Cathedral of Saint George at the Coptic Orthodox Church Centre in Stevenage and conveyed words of thanks to the heads of Christian denominations and other dignitaries who were present at this occasion, including representatives of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. Gordon Brown the Archbishop of Canterbury The Most Rev. Dr. Rowan Williams, as well as others.

From the Centre, His Holiness and his delegation proceeded, accompanied by His Excellency Mr. Gihad Madi the Egyptian Ambassador to the United Kingdom, to Heathrow International Airport

The association Voice of the Copts states that on March 6, 2008 a meeting was held in Washington, D.C between Mr. Paul Casaca, a member of the European Parliament, and Mr. Ashraf Ramelah, president of Voice of the Copts.

The meeting was a follow up to the letter sent about February 10, 2008 to all members of the European Parliament, in which Mr. Ramelah was reporting the discrimination of the Copts and other religious minorities in Egypt.

 Pree Release

Dear President Bush:

During January 8-17, 2008, you will be touring the Middle East visiting several countries including Egypt. The purpose of your tour is to help the Palestinians and the Israelis reach a permanent reconciliation to their conflict and bring peace to that troubled region. This is a noble cause which we applaud you for taking and we pray that you succeed in your mission.

There is however another cause that we hope you will include in your agenda which we believe to be as important and urgent. It has to do with the grave state of the Christian Coptic minority of Egypt.
